R6 Throttle Tube Mod

Something I’ve been fighting for a while now on the ZX10R is the 100 throttle rotation. This makes it difficult on the track as you end up having to move your hand to apply wide-open-throttle (WOT). I wanted to document and report on the R6 Throttle Tube modifacation.

The R6 42mm drum is an easy modification to do. Here are the steps to follow:

  • Loosen the two screws
  • Remove the brackets
  • Disconnect the throttle cables
  • Remove the bar ends
  • Slide off the throttle tube
  • Grind off the two tabs on the lower housing
  • **NOTE**: Be sure you loosen the cables once you reassemble. You risk having the throttle stick open after assembly because the cable is tight. Just loosen it up and it will snap back just fine

This makes the WOT attempt much easier and I no longer feel like I would get stuck with throttle still on after coming off WOT. Something unexpected was the noticable was the quicker fuel delivery and it feels like the bike reacts more aggressively. This will take some getting used to.

I know there are many throttle modification out there but I went with the R6 tube because the 1/6 turn feels like a much-needed improvement without too much dynamic change of the bike. You just need to make sure you get the R6 tube because the R6S is the correct part and will not pit the ZX10R. You can use the Yamaha part number “2CO-26240”

For the R6 mod you will need to loosen your cables once you button it back up. It will feel fine upon assembly but it will stick open and thats cause the cable is tight . Just loosen it up and it will snap back just fine .If you ride wheelies alot get used to the throttle change cause it comes up alot more violent in conjunction to your way of riding them. ALSO Be careful rolling on throttle coming out of corners the front end now wants to rise cause of fuel delivery. I am not a tuner but i think personally the ECU is picking up the faster fuel delivery just fine.
